Bournemouth’s Environmentally Friendly Hotel
We are proud of our sandy beaches and are trying to scale down our footprint on our planet with the ultimate goal of being an environmentally friendly hotel. We are honoured to do our part to contribute and collaborate with our community in an effort to preserve Bournemouth’s natural beauty. When you choose to stay at Hotel Collingwood, you're doing your part to help. Find out more about our aspirations to lead the charge in sustainability for Bournemouth tourism.
How We’re Becoming A Green Hotel
Our goal is to become one of the greenest hotels in Bournemouth and demonstrate to other hotels that reducing their carbon footprint is achievable. In light of this goal, we’ve taken the following measures:
- Installed solar panels on the entire roof of the hotel.
- Added EV charging points in the carpark.
- Installed signage encouraging guests to save on water and laundry.
- Added additional recycling bins throughout the hotel.
- We now use environmentally friendly Ecolab detergents.
- Switched to green energy suppliers for utilities.
- Working towards our accreditation with the REST scheme
- Partnered with like minded organisations with a unified aim of achieving the same goals.
Schemes
With our unwavering commitment to achieving our sustainability goals we have actively searched for schemes that can help us along the way. Where possible, we will always use organisations in the local area, as to support our community even further.
We intend to leave the REST behind
As part of our ongoing plans and to demonstrate our commitment to being green we’re working toward to gaining accreditation in the Responsible, Ethical, Sustainable Tourism (REST) scheme. Working with the support of their team and reviewing the findings of their investigations, we intend to improve our work practices, ethics and general approach to sustainability as per their advice. See how together, we asses REST’s cornerstones to achieve our goals.
Environmental and economic management
Assesses our waste, pollution, energy consumption, water, carbon footprint, sustainable developments, sustainable practices, provenance and much more.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR)
Measures our relationships with the local community, charitable commitments, and our activities which go beyond the day-to-day.
HR and ethical employment
Includes legal compliance, alongside staffing policies, unique initiatives and incentives, plus feedback from our staff.
Supplier practices and business compliance
Looks at the way in which we source and work with our suppliers; how we select them initially, in addition to the ways we work together to improve co-sustainability.
What is REST?
After listening to increasing consumer demand for a seperate quality mark to asses and measure the hospitality, leisure and tourism sector, REST was designed. REST is an initiative, the first of its kind. A team of experts with an in-depth understanding of the practices that affect hospitality and tourism businesses, they offer objective investigations, recommendations and support. An objective approach is taken to each of their four cornerstones, Environmental and economic management, Corporate social responsibility (CSR), HR and ethical employment and Supplier practices and business compliance, they are then fairly measured to ascertain an accurate assessment.
Our Green Policy
Our recycling policy has been brought to the forefront of our efforts for all waste. We encourage our guests to recycle their refuse responsibly in our provided bins. Sometimes there’s just no more room for pudding and we’ve taken this into consideration by including food composting to our policy. We’re cutting down on our overall refuse by composting our leftovers so nothing is truly wasted.
What else are we are doing?
Alongside the changes we’ve made in the hotel, we actively encourage our guests to take our green policy home with them and adopt a greener lifestyle. The changes we make today will improve our planet for generations to come, using less water and making better choices in the products we use is just the beginning. We hope that if by encouraging change and leading the charge across Bournemouth hospitality and tourism businesses our town will in turn become leaders in creating a greener planet.
Partnerships
We know that our goals cannot be achieved alone; we are stronger together. That’s why we’ve chosen to work with some great organisations in the hope that as a team our job will become easier. We are always looking for ways to work smarter for our environment and creating new partnerships is in our future plans.
A Greener Bournemouth Community
We’ve developed a partnership with Coacoara foundation, a non-profitable foundation and great local environmentally minded organisation. The Coacoara foundation provides alternative biodegradable and eco friendly household products to reduce plastic usage and we’re honored to announce that we now feature some of their products in our rooms.
Coacoara also organise beach clean ups every Sunday in Bournemouth and Poole to reduce the amount of plastic and refuse that remain on our beaches and enter the ocean. We’ve participated in these beach cleans and are looking forward to cleans in the future!

Donate a tree while you eat Al Fresco
We've partnered with 'We Do Ethical.' A local organisation dedicated to increasing sustainable development and reducing pollution for a greener planet.
The proceeds from every 'sharing dish' sold from our Aperitivo menu will be donated toward the pledge a tree initiative in Africa. This helps smallholding farmers out of poverty and hunger, helping them to grow fruits and vegetables.
In addition each pledge helps to create a bio-diverse environment for natural wildlife to flourish also producing cleaner air for us all to enjoy.
The incredible project is only made possible by the support of the communities around the world, including ours.
